PRESS RELEASE

19.05.10 :: Past Bilderbergs :: Communication hiccups

A delegate at the very first Bilderberg meeting in 1954, and one of its key founders, General Charles Douglas Jackson, recalled the occasion:

"It was all very new and different. We were tucked away in a forest way back in Holland. There were no reporters. Tight security with guards all over the hotel.”

Things haven’t changed much. If anything, the veil of secrecy has been pulled tighter over the years. Bilderberg delegates not only refuse to talk about what goes on at the meeting, they frequently deny ever attending.

The most notorious denial is that of the former Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Hansard records Norman Baker MP asking the Prime Minister to confirm or deny that he'd been to Bilderberg. Without batting an eyelid, the Prime Minister said: "I have not attended any such meetings."

However, The Times reports: "With concern about sleaze in mind, Tony Blair has belatedly listed in the updated Register of Members' Interests (published tomorrow) a visit he made in 1993 to the Bilderberg Conference in Athens as Shadow Home Secretary."

And here is an eye-witness report, from the journalist William Rees-Mogg: "Last time I went to a Bilderberg conference, it was held in Athens, about three years ago. Tony Blair was there, not yet leader of the Labour Party..."

So what would make Tony Blair lie to Parliament about attending Bilderberg in 1993? Why will Kenneth Clarke, George Osborne, and Peter Mandelson, not talk about their visits?

Today, the new deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg has called for “a wholesale, big bang approach to political reform.” He pledges: “to reduce the power of political elites”. He says:

“Our democracy has suffered at the hands of encroaching centralisation and secrecy for decades.”

“We will reform our politics so it is open, transparent, decent.”

It will be interesting to see how many delegates to Bilderberg 2010 live up to these high standards.
