PRESS RELEASE
20.05.10 :: Bilderberg, Sitges :: A new spirit of transparency?
On Radio 4’s Today programme, Guardian journalist Charlie Skelton calls for an end to Bilderberg’s “conspiracy of silence”.
Speaking to Evan Davis on the Today Programme, Charlie Skelton has said that David Cameron and Nick Clegg’s spirit of “openness and transparency” in politics should be extended to the Bilderberg conference, where elected officials – such as Kenneth Clarke and George Osborne (both regular attendees) – meet and strategise with heads of industry, heads of state, policy makers, and financiers.
Although unlike Davos, for example – where “David Cameron gave a side briefing to assembled journalists” – at Bilderberg the relationship with the media simply doesn’t exist. “If CNN was here, I wouldn’t be here,” said Skelton, decrying the lack of press interest.
Skelton revealed that a four day “no fly zone” will be observed over the conference Hotel, for the duration of the meeting – enforced by police helicopters “presumably at the Spanish taxpayers’ expense”. This year is only the second time Spain has played host to Bilderberg – last year it was held in Greece, another of the PIIGS. And a leaked agenda shows that a key talking point of the 2010 conference is: “Will the euro survive?”
